Joint venture between Sony and Honda set to showcase high-tech EV at annual consumer electronics show:
Sony Honda Mobility (SHM), a joint venture between Sony and Honda, is preparing to unveil its first electric vehicle at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on January 4, 2023. The company recently released a teaser video showcasing the outline of the car's bonnet, hinting at the high-tech components and features that it will be equipped with.
According to SHM chair Yasuhide Mizuno, the plan is to "develop a car as hardware that will cater to the entertainment and network we would like to offer." This includes the inclusion of a PlayStation 5 for superior entertainment capabilities. The EV will also have Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities for certain situations and Level 2+ features for more situations. In addition, the car will offer the option of subscription services.
The Sony Honda EV is expected to begin rolling off production lines in North America in 2026, with online sales being prioritized. It will then be exported to Japan, with the possibility of being available in other countries as well. Pre-orders for the first SHM vehicle will open in the first half of 2025, with sales beginning before the end of that same year. It is currently unclear whether Honda or SHM will provide after-sales support for the EV.
